Family History
According to US Census records, this c.1900 Shingle style home was owned by Fred N. Beal (1860-1950). Fred was a lumberman who married Ella in the mid 1880s. Their first son died at birth in 1886, but a healthy child, Hermina, was born in 1889. Sadly, it appears that Ella died in childbirth in 1893 at the young age of 30. The infant daughter was named after her mother Ella.
Fred grieved for quite a while. The children must have gone to live with relatives, because they were not with him in 1900. We find him, however, reunited with his daughters Hermina and Ella in the house in 1910. Hermina’s husband is not in the picture, but her baby daughter Ruth is in the house.
Fred later married Louise Wellman Atwood who was 18 years his junior sometime between 1910 and 1915. They moved into 27 Main St. and had a daughter in 1915. They lived in the house for decades, at least until after the 1940 US Census.
Town Info
A long, winding stretch of the Sandy River passes through the village of Phillips. In fact, the property of our featured house backs up to the river’s rock strewn shores. It was the ideal town for Fred’s trade as a lumberman as the river powered a sawmill, grist mill, and a carding mill around the turn of the century. Manufacturing activity centered on lumber, horse carriages and harnesses, furniture, and clothing.
Today the quintessential Maine village houses the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad museum which offers train rides and a walking tour of its buildings and restored railroad cars. It really is a lovely, quaint place.
