Pros of Living in Parsons, KS
Very Affordable Cost of Living
Parsons’ cost of living is about 25-30 % below the national average, with housing especially cheap (median home value well below many U.S. cities). This makes it attractive for people on tighter budgets or retirees.
Low Housing Prices & Variety
Homes range from modest affordable houses to historic 1920s or Craftsman-style homes, often on larger lots. There’s a variety of housing stock for different needs.
Small-Town Community & Tight Knit Feel
Many residents appreciate the close-knit, small-town atmosphere, where neighbors know each other and community events like the Katy Days Festival bring people together each year.
Accessible Amenities for a Small Town
Parsons has local shops, restaurants, parks, a golf course, library, and outdoor spaces like the Parsons Arboretum and Forest Park — more than you might expect for a town of its size.
Decent Healthcare Access (for Rural KS)
Labette Health serves the community with emergency and general care services locally, easing concerns about routine healthcare without long drives.
Good for Commuting & Walkability
Most everyday errands are a short drive away, and there’s generally good access to necessities without long commutes.
Cons of Living in Parsons, KS
High Crime Rates (Relative to Averages)
Parsons has crime rates significantly above national averages — particularly for property and violent crime — which many residents cite as a real concern and something to research by neighborhood.
Economic Challenges & Lower Income Levels
Median household income in Parsons is well below the national median, and about 1 in 5 residents lives below the poverty line, making financial stability difficult for some families.
Population Decline & Limited Growth
The city’s population has been shrinking or stagnant over time, which can slow economic development, reduce demand for services, and limit new investment.
Fewer Job & Industry Options
Job opportunities in specialized or high-paying sectors can be limited, and many residents note that economic diversification is lacking compared with larger cities.
Limited Big-City Amenities
While Parsons has basic amenities, it doesn’t offer extensive nightlife, major cultural venues, or big-box retail — so residents often travel to larger towns for variety.
Education Quality Varies
School performance and educational resources are mixed, and some people feel local schools don’t match the quality found in more affluent or larger districts.
