Canton History
In 1825 Canton was founded by settler Isaac Swan. Sadly, Isaac Swan and his infant child and three others were killed in the tornado of 1835. Abundant coal and labor force, the Illinois River and close proximity to railroads established Canton as a factory town. International Harvester was located there until it closed in 1983.
Tragically, founder Isaac Swan, his infant child, and three other people died in the devastating F-5 tornado of June 1835. “Isaac Swan and his child were found in the wreckage of their cabin, the baby dying in its mother’s arms.” Some thought the tornado was divine retribution for Canton permitting a circus performance the previous week. In 1975, another a F-5 tornado hit the city, killing two people and causing massive damage to the downtown area. According to Wikipedia, “A circus had visited the city just one week prior, the first circus to entertain in Canton since 1835.” Five months later in November 1975, the Canton City Council passed an ordinance banning circuses within the city limits in perpetuity.
Guess those clowns brought bad luck.
