History
The Wisteria Hotel, later called Hotel Wisteria and Infirmary, constructed in 1910, served as one of Winona’s premier accommodations for railway travelers. This establishment reached its peak activity during the roaring twenties and the following decade, when it operated alongside the competing Winona Hotel situated directly opposite on the same street, creating a vibrant hospitality district.

Proprietors W.B. and Delia Van Kirk commissioned the distinctive structure from architect Reuben Harrison Hunt, a prominent designer based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. What sets the Wisteria apart from Hunt’s typical portfolio is its timber frame construction—a departure from his usual preference for masonry materials like brick and stone found in his other projects.
The building contractor R. Jesty & Company handled the construction of the Wisteria Hotel.
In the 1930s, the hotel suffered a fire claiming the veranda.
