OHU50K NOTES
Fort Dodge
Fort Dodge (pop. 25,206) traces its start to 1850 when the United States Army erected a fort at where the Des Moines River and Lizard Creek meet. It was named after Henry Dodge, former governor of Wisconsin Territory (which included Iowa until Iowa became a state in 1846).
After the fort was abandoned in 1853, William Willams, a civilian storekeeper in Fort Dodge, purchased the land and buildings in 1854. The town became known for its gypsum production, with many of the grander homes being built by industrialists. Perhaps the beautiful brick home next door to our featured home was one such house.
Today’s House
This home appears to be a flip. It was purchased in October of 2018 for $16,200, and has had basic cosmetic work done including, floor refinishing, new carpeting and new interior paint. The kitchen has also had somewhat of a makeover with new countertops and refinished cabinets. Property taxes are very low, but can’t say the same for the crime rate.
