History

Originally built in 1881 as a log-sided building, the brick Sterling School building was built shortly before 1913. It is located in section 34 of the Withee Township, on the southwest corner of what is now Highway 29 and Fischer Avenue. The building is now used as a private residence.

Pros of Thorp, WI

  1. Affordable Cost of Living

    • Overall cost of living in Thorp is significantly lower than the U.S. average.

    • Housing is especially affordable: both home prices and rents are well below U.S. norms.

    • Typical home values are lower; rent for places is modest.

  2. Smaller, Close‑knit Community

    • With a population under ~1,800, Thorp is small enough that people tend to know one another.

    • Less congestion, traffic, and noise than a bigger city. Often more peace & slower pace.

  3. Relatively Low Crime in Some Metrics

    • Thorp is safer than many places: violent crime is well below the national average; property crime is also lower in many comparisons.

    • Year‑over‑year crime trends appear favorable (some decrease observed in certain categories) in some reports.

  4. Rural / Open Space / Natural Environment

    • Much of the area is rural or semi‑rural; good for people who like open land, less crowding, more natural surroundings.

    • Likely possibilities for outdoor recreation, quiet living, etc.

  5. Moderate Household Income (Relative to Cost)

    • Median household income is not super high, but when paired with the low cost of housing and other expenses, many households likely enjoy a decent standard of living.

    • Poverty rate is moderate — lower than many U.S. places, though not zero.

  6. Stable (though Slightly Declining) Population, Modest Growth in Property Values

    • The population seems fairly stable, with small declines. For people who like consistency/not huge swings, this can be a plus.

    • Home value trends: Zillow shows increases, so there is some appreciation.

Cons / Challenges of Thorp, WI

  1. Small Size & Limited Amenities

    • Because it’s a small city, there are fewer options locally for shopping, dining, entertainment, specialty services. For many things you may need to travel.

    • Fewer options for cultural, social, or nightlife compared to larger towns or cities.

  2. Fewer Job Opportunities / Lower Wage Spectrum

    • Given its size and rural nature, high‑paying jobs, diversified industry or specialized careers may be limited.

    • Those who work in niches with limited local presence may have to commute or move out.

  3. Population Decline Slightly

    • The population is declining or flat in recent years. While small declines are typical in many rural towns, it can mean fewer investments, less growth in services, etc.

  4. Lower Educational Attainment Overall

    • Percentage of adults with bachelor’s degrees or higher is notably below the U.S. average.

    • For families or individuals who prioritize advanced educational opportunities, this might be a limiting factor.

  5. Some Crime / Safety Variation

    • While overall rates are low, there is still crime, and some variation by neighborhood. For example, property crime exists.

    • “Chance of becoming a victim” is lower than many places, but that doesn’t mean risk is zero. Depending on the exact spot, safety will differ.

  6. Aging Population / Demographic Imbalance

    • Median age is a bit higher (≈ 41‑42), which means relatively fewer young adults in the mix.

    • For some, fewer young people may mean fewer new businesses, less “buzz,” fewer modern amenities.

  7. Infrastructure & Service Limitations

    • Some services common in bigger towns might be limited (public transit, specialized medical care, etc.).

    • Also depending on exact location, broadband/internet speed, utilities, etc., might not be as robust as in metropolitan areas.
