Pros of living in Akron, Ohio

1. Very affordable cost of living

  • Akron is ~20–30% cheaper than the U.S. average
  • Median home prices are relatively low (often around $130k range)
This makes it attractive for first-time buyers or anyone leaving expensive states (like California).

2. Cheap housing = easier homeownership

  • You can get larger homes or historic properties for much less than in major cities
  • Rent is also significantly lower than most metro areas.

3. Access to nature and parks

  • Close to places like Cuyahoga Valley National Park
  • Plenty of trails, green spaces, and outdoor activities

4. Decent amenities for a mid-sized city

  • Restaurants, local arts, sports, and cultural events are available
  • Close to Cleveland (~30–40 min), so you can access a bigger city easily.

5. Less crowded, slower pace of life

  • Easier commutes and less congestion than big metros
  • More “small-city feel” with urban perks

 Cons of living in Akron

1. Crime rates are a concern

  • Crime is higher than the national average in many areas
  • Safety varies a lot by neighborhood (some areas are fine, others not)

2. Job market can be limited

  • Historically dependent on manufacturing (rubber industry)
  • Fewer high-paying or specialized job opportunities compared to bigger cities

Important: many people move there after securing remote work or a job elsewhere.

3. Harsh winters

  • Cold, snowy winters can be long and gray
  • Big adjustment if you’re used to mild climates

4. Limited public transportation

  • You’ll likely need a car to get around

Family History

In the 1930s, this was the residence of Willis G. Swick and his wife Minnie, a laborer for a rubber company. Willis was an agent for an account collection agency. The couple lived in the home with their two children, Beulah and Blaine. Sadly, Beulah died in the home at age 17 in 1931. Three months later her mother, Minnie, passed away in the home at age 42.
