Pros

• Affordable housing. Wichita Falls is one of the more affordable Texas cities. You can get substantially more house for your money than in Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, or most of Texas’s larger metros.
• Low overall cost of living. This is probably the city’s biggest advantage. Housing, utilities, and everyday expenses tend to be relatively manageable.
• No Texas state income tax. This can be particularly attractive for people with decent incomes, retirees, and remote workers.
• Sheppard Air Force Base. The base is a major economic engine and provides a steady stream of jobs, military personnel, contractors, and related businesses.
• Reasonable access to larger cities. Wichita Falls is about 2 hours from the Dallas–Fort Worth area, so a major metro is reachable for occasional shopping, specialist healthcare, airports, sports, or entertainment.
• Decent amenities for its size. Unlike very small towns, Wichita Falls has multiple grocery stores, restaurants, shopping centers, hospitals, parks, gyms, and entertainment options.
• Outdoor recreation. Lake Wichita, Lucy Park, River Bend Nature Center, and nearby state parks provide opportunities for fishing, hiking, boating, cycling, and camping.
• Good for people who don’t want a huge city. You get many of the basic amenities of a city without DFW-level traffic and congestion.
• Military-friendly community. The presence of Sheppard creates a relatively diverse population and a community accustomed to military families.

Cons

• Extremely hot summers. This is a serious consideration. Wichita Falls regularly experiences temperatures over 100°F, and the combination of heat and wind can be unpleasant.
• Wind. Wichita Falls is in North Texas/Texas Panhandle-adjacent country, so strong winds are common.
• Severe weather. Tornadoes, hail, thunderstorms, drought, and extreme heat are all things to consider when buying property.
• Water concerns. North Texas has periodic drought and water-supply concerns, so it’s worth understanding the local water situation.
• Limited job diversity. The economy is much smaller than DFW’s. Healthcare, education, government/military, manufacturing, retail, and services dominate. If you need a highly specialized career, options are more limited.
• Some economic stagnation. Wichita Falls has struggled with population growth and economic expansion compared with rapidly growing Texas cities.
• Crime varies considerably by neighborhood. I’d research the specific area carefully rather than judging the entire city by a single crime statistic.
