Realtor Comments

Step back in time with this historic home on Main Street! This grand, two-story residence boasts classic Southern architecture with towering columns, a sprawling front porch, and elegant dormer windows. Nestled behind a stone fence, the property offers a sense of privacy while being centrally located. NEEDS MAJOR WORK STARTING WITH THE ROOF. Will not qualify for any government backed loan. It once was and still could be a magnificent home with the right buyer. Beautiful details, big doors and windows, wrap around porch. Sadly, t’s been neglected for a long time.

Family History

I believe this was the Jonathan Henry Cavaness House. J. Henry (1828-1883) was a dry good merchant. The Cavaness family was deeply involved in the early development of Monticello and Drew County. J. Henry married Elizabeth Green (1834-1928) in 1851, and the couple had 10 children, Joseph, an infant son who died in childbirth, Evelyn, Nancy, John, Sallie, Andrew, Effie, Virginia and Garvin. In fact, Garvin, a successful businessman,  built the Garvin Cavaness House (now the Drew County Historical Museum)  404 South Main Street.  The house was built over a ten-year period, 1906–1916,
