History
This was the family residence of William S. Purington. Purington’s, ancestors were of early Massachusetts stock. William moved to Galesburg in 1890 at the age of 30, where he and his brother D.V. Purlington, owned and operated the Purlington Paving Brick Company. The company became one of the largest manufacturers of paving bricks in the world.
Purington and his brother D.V. Purington established and operated the Purington Paving Brick Co. located in East Galesburg. William Purington was vice president and plant manager of the brick plant. The operation became one of the largest producers of paving bricks in the entire world.
W.S. lived in the home with his wife, Nellie, his children, William, Hellen, D.S.,
n W.S. Purington remained active in the brick yards operation until 1910 when he announced for health reasons he was retiring. He was not only one of the area’s leading businessmen, but also served on the Galesburg School Board for several years. The Purington family lived in the Galesburg resident on North Prairie Street until 1926. He passed away in 1936 at the age of 76 in Akron, Ohio.
