History
Janette’s Galleria
Until recently, this building was the home of Janette’s Galleria, an antiques shop. Janette showed her wares in 20 of the 23 rooms, each with a different theme.
Stagecoach Stop Hotel
In the 1800s, the building was the Union Hotel on a stagecoach stop. Travelers would rest here at the brick building that was built in 1848.
James Burnside, whose father Samuel Burnside came to the US from Ireland in 1817, purchased the hotel property from the Michael and Henry Jordan. The hotel had many rooms for its weary travelers, as well as a barber shop and pub in its walk-in basement.
James was married in 1848 to Catherine Howe the same year he built the hotel, and to couple 10 children were born, seven of whom survived to adulthood: Samuel H, Robert F., Fannie Glass, John A., James E., William H., and Joseph P. Mr. and Mrs. Burnside were described as “a pleasant old couple… (who) run a good hotel and are well thought of by all who know them.”
