Family History
Watts
This was the home of Thomas and Annie Watts. Thomas Watts was born in Mississippi in 1862. He was married to Annie Laurie Rain Watts (1869-1940) and the couple raised three children in this home, Inez, Howard and Fannie. Thomas was a locomotive engineer. The Watts owned the house free and clear, and after two of the children left the nest, Annie opened the house up to boarders, renting to up to five male boarders at a time, plus a servant girl.
Whitis
Thomas passed away in 1923. Annie and her daughter Fannie (a clerk in the railroad office) continued to live in the home with boarders and a servant girl until Annie’s death in 1940, upon which time the Whitis family purchased the home. After serving in the US Navy for two years during WWII, W.L. became a machinist for the Texas & Pacific Railway. He and his wife Virginia continued to rent rooms to boarders.
