Town History
The town was named after Richard Oliver, the community’s first postmaster. He provided mail service out of his 35-room mansion which was also an inn. Oliver was also the first to tap into the mineral springs.
In 1873, Joseph Richards purchased Oliver’s land and built a resort hotel, the Oliver Springs Hotel in 1894, which became very popular with wealthy guests seeking health benefits from the mineral springs.
The hotel, however, burned in 1905, and the town made the poor decision to cover the springs rather than rebuild the hotel. You can still see evidence of water conduits and reservoirs on the site.
After that, the area became dependent on the coal industry, and subsequent to that it became dependent on business generated from the nearby Manhattan project. By the early 1990s, that business dried up, and Oliver Springs has been struggling to find a base for their economy ever since.

Those upstairs rooms look like both the windows and the floors need to be replaced.
