Church and Convent History
Two lots on which the church and rectory (later to be the convent) were purchased on Power Street in 1901 from John Meegan. Building began on St. Casimer church in 1902 by Polish immigrants. It wasn’t until 1907, however, after a lengthy delay caused when 41 members of the congregation tragically died in the Rolling Mill Mine disaster.
In 1990, St. Casimer merged with Emerick. The church however, closed in 2009, and in 2015, the Stellar Property Development and Event Production LLC purchased the former St. Casimir from 1901 Church, Inc. The Stella Steeples Project is dedicated to preserving and repurposing the Cambria neighborhood’s architectural treasures.
