History

The residence has gone by several names over the years, including Penniman’s Castle, The Castle on Main Street, and The Kingman Castle. The home was originally built for for Allen Penniman, whose family built the Penniman Block business area, which was replaced with the Heritage Tower.

The land was purchased by C.W. Post of Post Cereal fame,  and architect Martin Chivers was commissioned by Allen Penniman to design the home. After Penniman moved to Califorinia, he sold the home to his mother-in-law. Subsequently, the castle changed hands many times.  In the 1960s, theChurch of Christ held services in the building, then in 1994, the Doug and Kathleen Kidder purchased and restored the home. In 2001, it was listed on the National Register.

wow. An amazing house. It appears to be an octoganal house with rooms sticking out from the core. A bit of a disconcerting layout, and so much wallpaper, with so many patterns. It could do with a serious toning down.

Great historic home, too bad current occupants do not have it set up with historical decor. Possibilities are awsome for the right owners. Still needs lots of refurbishing on the floors and roof leaks which require a full change in that rooms wallpapering. Would love to bring this house back to its historic past.
