Family History

I am going out on a limb on this one, but I have every reason to believe this circa 1865 home was owned by John Hutchinson. John Hutchinson (1827-1917) came to the area with his brother James in 1859 and purchased Brintnall’s saw mill so they could build a grist mill. It stood just down the road from our featured house. I believe John had this house built for his wife Mary Ellen Burlingame Hutchinson (1829-1914) whom he married in 1846. The couple shared the home one child Bethbyra.

After the Bethbyra left the nest, John retired as proprietor of the flour mill after 40 year, but he also served as Mayor of Elroy. The old settler was described as standing “for honesty and integrity and taking a great interest in helping churches get a start” in Elroy. John died at age 90 at home and funeral services were held in the home. He had predeceased his beloved Mary by three years. The couple had been married for 68 years.

I wonder if the 1400+ sq ft is correct; it looks bigger than that. Possible this is the sq ft of only the first floor?
