Sold – Circa 1905 Fixer Upper in Camden, NJ Under $40K – Sad History
OHU50K Notes $39,900 Sold
OHU50K is featuring this fixer for two reasons: 1. The picture of the exterior makes a great photograph, and 2. The house has a very sad history. Despite the realtor describing the Cooper Point neighborhood as “BOOMING,” this property may be a hard sell, but it does have a story to tell.

Family History
This house not only is in sad shape, but its history is so very sad as well. In 19o5, George A. Peyton and his wife, Helen, purchased this home from George’s salary as a conductor for the railroad, By 1921, the couple had five children, Francis, Anna, George and four-year-old twins Edward and Hellen. In August of 1921, young Edward died suddenly. The funeral services were held in the home.
Fifty-five years later another tragedy happened to residents of the home. Brothers Luis and Roberto Beniques ages 13 and 14, along with two friends, built a raft of boards and an old door and launched it in the Delaware River on a cold April day in 1976. Strong winds carried the raft to the center of the choppy river, one of the boys panicked, jumped overboard tipping over the raft and pulling the other three boys into the icy cold river. All four boys drowned.
