Family History

This was the home of William Betterly (1862-1937) and his wife, Ellen Gould Betterly (1865-1949). In his younger days. William was a singing teacher with a strong bass voice. He was a farmer but gave lessons on the side in schools and churches during the winters when recreational activities were sparse in the area. William became so popular that he began giving lessons in his own school, an abandoned church. Later in life, he made an earning as a road grader.

William and Ellen purchased the house and resided here with their adult children, Walter, an engineer, and Luella, a student. After William died in 1937, the couple’s oldest daughter and her husband moved into the home, and the family lived here at least into the 1950s.
