Trona History

Trona was founded in the Searles Valley of the Mohave Desert in 1914 to house the workforce of the American Trona Corp., a mineral mining company. In the company’s boom time, a movie theater, dance hall, numerous bars, churches, and stores dotted Trona’s streets. As the company lost business and the workforce dwindled, Trona began a decline. Residents had just started an attempt to revitalize the hardscrabble town, when the 2019 earthquake hit, halting further efforts.
