Sold – Circa Victorian-Era Home For Sale in Alton, IL Under $58K
OHU50K Notes $58,200 Reduced to $57,900 Sold
I couldn’t wait to post this beautiful Victorian-era home for sale in Alton, Illinois, until Under $100K Sunday in fear it would be gone by then.
You may remember this one from April. It went pending lickity split, but apparently the deal fell through, and it has been reduced a bit.
Disregard the agent’s 1930 build date. The home’s address is mentioned in a 1900 article in The Alton Evening Telegraph, so it is at least that old. This home, located on a corner lot in a neighborhood of beautiful older homes, is so worthy of a thoughtful restoration.

Family History
This was the home of the Stout Family from 1911 at least until the 1940s. Richard Stout (1850-1930) was Treasurer of the Equitable Powder Company before his retirement. He lived here with his wife Mary (1852-1944) his three adult daughters, Emilie, Alice and Helen Stout, and a maid. All three daughters were teachers in a private school. Alice and Helen appear to have married late in life sometime before 1940, while Emilie remained a spinster and continued to live in the home after her parents’ deaths, along with a maid and a lodger.

2021 tax was over $6300. That’s REALLY high!
Such a shame. This house has more character left than most its age.

The most beautiful thing about this house is that the woodwork hasn’t been painted! This would be a stunning restoration.
