Cute c.1890 Illinois Handyman Special on Double Lot $45K
April 26, 2024
OHU50K Notes $45,000
The Illinois handyman special sits on a third of an acre with a detached garage. The home has two bedrooms, one bath, 706 square feet, front and side porches, hardwood floors, unpainted woodwork, clawfoot tub but no shower. It does have central air and heat, however, as well as public water and sewer, and an unfinished basement with a laundry area and Pittsburgh potty. I call dibs on the cookstove down there.

Family History
In the 1930s and 1940s, this was the home of John Siroky (1888-1940). He married his wife Susan Tomasko (1885-1941) in 1909, and lived with her and their children, Mary, Frances and Martha. John was born in Slovakia, had a 5th grade education and worked as a coal miner before he got sick. Then Susan became the main bread winner grit blasting in a glass factory. Mary also helped out as a packer in the glass factory. The family owned the home, and the adult children continued to live there after the death of John in 1950 at the age of 52 and sadly 10 months later, the death of Susan at age 55.
