OHU50K NOTES
Mannington
Before being renamed Mannington in 1856, the town went by a couple of other names – Forks of Buffalo and Koon Town. In the late 1700s, most of the land was owned by Robert Rutherford, a Revolutionary War financier and good friend of George Washington. He sold his holdings to a James Brown who after having financial setbacks, sold the land at public auction to Baltimore investors. They divided the acreage into lots and several log cabins were built as well as a tavern owned by Samuel Koon. When the railroad came through, logging, coal, tannery, lumber and oil became big business in the area, and the town (now called the more dignified name of Mannington) thrived. The Great Depression, however, caused the town to go from boom to bust, and the population decreased sharply.
