OHU50K NOTES
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, this old farmhouse for sale in Edwardsport, Indiana, is known as the Simonson House.
Family Background
This is a rags to riches story. Alfred Simonson (1815-1902) was born into dire poverty and was compelled to work at various manual labor jobs from a very young age. After a hard day’s work, he also spinned cotton with his mother at night. These unfortunate circumstances led young Alfred without much of an education. He only attended school for about two or three weeks during his entire childhood.
He was a saver, however, and at the age of 22 was able to buy a team of horses. From there he rented a farm, thus beginning his road to success.
In 1873, Alfred, now a successful merchant, built this home for his wife Sarah, sons Jefferson and Lafayette, and daughters Flora, Laura, Dora and Cora.
Architectural Details
NRHP describes this house as a mid-19th century Greek Revival. The two-story, brick, vernacular style I-house has a single-story ell on the west rear side. The ell connects to an older building that was probably either a merchant shop or a summer kitchen.
According to NRHP, “The chimneys, walls, and foundation are brick fired locally in the Simonson pasture. The interior of the house reflects indigenous hardwoods such as poplar and pine in the floors, staircase and trim. The building is in good condition and has had minimal alterations since its construction.”
