With the high cost of housing these days, people are getting creative. If you are into tiny living, a caboose might be of interest. I have included some photos of rehabbed interiors at the bottom of the post for inspiration.

Restoration Costs

Some things you may want to consider before rehabbing a caboose are costs. For a caboose this size, it should take about $1,000 to restore the exterior.  For windows, skylights, plumbing, insulation, flooring, a water heat, solar power system, bathroom and kitchen appliance, experts estimate about $15,000 for the interior. To move the caboose by highway, figure about $1,200 to load and at least $1.30 per mile.

Appx 44.5 feet long (including outdoor decks) x 10 feet wide. Enclosed interior space is appx 20′ long. 

Wired for electricity with outlets and plumbed for sink. 

Has a dedicated electrical panel breaker box. 

Has the original wood doors with windows on each end and a metal deck in the front and small covered deck area on the back which is also original. 

All 8 windows in cupola have been replaced with low E vinyl windows. 

Inside is open and empty except for the sink and a water heater which are both located in the back end. 

Original wheels. Each end of the caboose has the original steel stairs.  The front end has stairs at each corner and the back end has one set at the left side corner. The caboose is sitting on authentic railroad tracks which are included in purchase.
