History

A Civil War Veteran built the former Stone Lodge, which in the 1960s had the reputation of being a very elegant venue for weddings and special events. Later, it became the Victorian Inn, known for its elegant dining room. Before any of this, however, the mansion was built by Civil War Major William Johnston (1842-1910) in 1886. He was a Civil War hero who later became an attorney and owned a stone company. The Major married his wife, Elizabeth Van Dolsen (1849-1916) in 1872. They raised their children,  George, William, Harry, Agnes and Edwin in this home.

The mansion is constructed of limestone and was built to resemble a small castle.  The limestone home, with it’s oval arched porch and three-story tower, took four years to build.
