Pros:

  1. Affordable Housing Market
Compared to other major U.S. cities, St. Louis offers a very affordable cost of living—especially in terms of real estate. You can get a lot of house for your money.

  2. Rich Culture and History
St. Louis has a deep historical legacy and cultural vibrancy, from its French colonial roots to its role in the westward expansion. The city is also known for its iconic Gateway Arch, historic neighborhoods, and lively music and food scenes.

  3. Free Attractions and Green Space
Many major attractions—like the Saint Louis Zoo, Art Museum, Science Center, and Forest Park—are completely free, making it a great city for families and budget-conscious residents.

  4. Diverse Neighborhoods
From the trendy Central West End to the artsy vibe of The Grove and the historic charm of Soulard, St. Louis offers a wide variety of living environments to suit different lifestyles.

  5. Strong Healthcare and Education Institutions
Home to major hospitals and universities like Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University, and Saint Louis University.

  6. Food Scene
The city has a growing culinary reputation, known for local staples like toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, and St. Louis–style pizza, along with craft breweries and BBQ joints.

Cons:

  1. Crime in Certain Areas
St. Louis has struggled with crime, particularly in specific neighborhoods. While many areas are very safe, crime stats can be misleading without understanding the local geography.

  2. Urban Decay and Blight
Parts of the city show signs of economic decline, with vacant properties and underdeveloped infrastructure in some neighborhoods.

  3. Weather Extremes
Summers are hot and humid, winters can be icy, and the city is vulnerable to spring storms and occasional tornadoes.

  4. Public Transit Limitations
While MetroLink and MetroBus exist, the system doesn’t serve the entire metro area effectively. Most residents rely on cars.

  5. School System Concerns
While there are excellent private and charter schools, the public school system in some parts of the city faces challenges with funding and performance.
