New York mansion for sale

Save This Old c.1890 New York Mansion For Sale $15K

$15,000

Here is a c.1890 New York mansion for sale in need of a complete restoration. We first featured this home back in the beginning of November 2019. It sold back then for $20,000, but it is back on the market for $15,000. The six-bedroom, four-bath home was subsequently demoed, but I included the 2015 listing at the bottom half of the page to show what it looked like before the demo.  I am always saddened when such beauties go to wrack and ruin, but when I saw the condition of the hexagonal tile, it almost made me weep.

I especially love the arched windows in the bathroom, but you have to check out the house next door on Google Maps. Now if that were only for sale…..The owner of that house restored it back in 2000, putting $180,000 into it. He wanted to purchase and demolish our featured house, but city and state officials thwarted that plan in 2001.

Family History

This luxury dwelling in its day was the home of Fred Hammond (1873-1942), lawyer, clerk for the Assembly, and leader of the Republican Party in Onondaga County. Hammond lived in the home with his wife, Beulah, daughter, Genevieve, and his sister-in-law. He died in the home in 1942, and then-mayor of Syracuse, Thomas Kennedy, acted as one of the pallbearers at the funeral service in Hammond’s living room.
The home was converted into a group home, and was owned by the state since 1970.

Per Wikipedia – “He was born on July 21, 1872, in CanastotaMadison County, New York, the son of Henry Clay Hammond (1844–1918) and Amorette A. (Brown) Hammond (1846–1939). The family removed to Utica where he attended the graded schools. In 1885, the family moved to Syracuse. There he attended grammar school, and graduated from Syracuse High School in 1891. Then he attended business college, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1894, and practiced in Syracuse. He was a member of the Board of Supervisors of Onondaga County (Syracuse, 13th Ward) from 1897 to 1900.[1]

Career

Hammond was a member of the New York State Assembly in 190119021903190419051906190719081909 and 1911; and was Chairman of the Committee on Revision in 1903, and Chairman of the Committee on Affairs of Cities in 1908 and 1909.

He was Clerk of the New York State Assembly in 1912, and from 1914 to 1934, officiating in the 135th137th138th139th140th141st142nd143rd144th145th146th147th148th149th150th151st152nd153rd154th155th156th and 157th New York State Legislatures. At the beginning of the 157th Session, the Republican Party was split, and no Clerk could be elected. On January 12, Speaker Joseph A. McGinnies appointed Hammond without election.[3] At the end of this term, Hammond retired, citing health problems.[4]

He died on January 7, 1942, at his home in Syracuse, New York; and was buried at the Oakwood Cemetery there.”
