Known as the Gustave Schumacher House, this house was built around 1885 and was put on “Saint Joseph’s Ten Most Endangered Historic Places” list in 2004. Gustave (1853-1920) and his wife Wilheminia Hansson Schumacher, aka Minnie (1855-1937) came to America in 1873 and had three children, Alma, Louis and Ramond. Gustave opened up a grocery store and apparently did quite well as he purchased this home, had a live-in maid and sent his two sons to college. Louis, in fact, became an electrical engineer for Westingthouse.  The family lived in the home for over 40 years. I don’t know about you, but it makes me so sad to see this house like this. The Schumacher family came to this country and built themselves the American Dream, only to see their fruits crumble to the ground.

REALTOR COMMENTS

This house is uninhabitable, it is a total rehab, all of the charm can be brought back to life. The owners have got a lot of the original wood and trim into the house, windows, doors, bathtubs, sinks, door knobs original to the house are stacked in piles. There are architectural plans to share. The entire upstairs has been framed and ready for bedrooms and a bath. A lot of the original woodwork staircasing is already there. So much potential.

Always wondered how difficult/expensive it would be to take something like this apart and reassemble states away (PA in this case) in order to save it.

I “walked around” the Google street view and saw that blocks on either end are pretty good. Beautiful, well maintained and restored big houses. Though this house sits in a stretch of two blocks that look really sketchy, someone fearless, capable, and well financed could rehabilitate this property to its former, rightful glory. It’s a beaut!
