Family History

This was the home of Clarence Sinclair Russell (1888-1934). Clarence married Mary Augusta Ratcliff (1894-1981) in 1917, and the couple purchased this home several years later. They lived here with their two young sons, George and James, as well as Clarence’s father, mother and brother. Clarence was a cashier for the Southern Life and Health Insurance Company, and Mary was active in the East Methodist Church Missionary Club.

Sadly, Clarence died at home at the young age of 45 in 1934. Mary continued to live in the home, and used her inheritance money from her husband to purchase and operate a dry cleaners in order to support her family. She worked in it well into her old age. She never remarried, and died at age 87 in 1981.
