Promise City
Talk about small towns! Promise City sits at the southern border of Iowa and has 88 residents. It wasn’t always this small, though. The first settlers arrived at this flat spot on the plains in 1852, and by 1871, when the railroad came through, the town was thriving with a bustling main street with several general stores, banks, furniture store, millinery shop, drug store, restaurants, lumber business, doctor offices, blacksmith, hotels and churches. They even had a newspaper in the early 1900s. I guess promises were broken over the decades, because now Promise City is not much more than a post office and a smattering of houses.
