History
HistoricEvansville.com has the build date of this Queen Anne as 1906. It was designed by architects Harris and Shopbell for Dr. Paul Charles Rietz. Harris and Shopbell are well-known for their brick residences and buildings that they designed in the late 19th and early 20th century in Evansville.
Family History
Dr. Paul Charles Rietz ( 1875-1923), was of German descent. He graduated from Rush Medical School in Chicago, Illinois, in 1898 and married Ida Laupe in 1901. The couple raised their children, Paul Jr. and Esther, in this home. Both were college educated. Sadly, the good doctor died in 1923 of chronic nephritis at the age of 47. A few weeks before his death, he told his daughter Esther that he would not live to see her high school graduation. His wife and family continued to live in the home until Ida’s death in 1958.
