The Newry Mill is a historic textile mill located in the village of Newry in Oconee County, South Carolina. It was founded in 1893 by Captain William Ashmead Courtenay, a former Confederate officer and former mayor of Charleston, during a period of rapid industrial growth in the post-Reconstruction South. Courtenay chose a site along the Little River, where a dam was constructed to provide water power for the mill’s machinery. The mill began producing cotton cloth in 1894 and was operated by the Courtenay Manufacturing Company. The village was named “Newry” after Courtenay’s ancestral home in County Down, Ireland.

From its earliest years, the Newry Mill was more than just an industrial site; it was the center of a carefully planned mill village. Courtenay developed a self-contained community that included worker housing, a company store, a post office, churches, and other support buildings. This made Newry the first textile mill village in Oconee County and a model of the company-town system common throughout the Southern textile industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The mill and village grew steadily through the early 1900s and became a major employer in the area.

After Courtenay’s death in 1908, his sons continued to operate the mill until it was sold around 1920. Over the following decades, ownership changed several times, including periods under the Issaqueena Mill Company, Cannon Mill interests, and later Abney Mills of Greenwood, South Carolina. Under Abney Mills, the facility was modernized and remained productive through the mid-20th century. The mill reached high levels of output during World War II, when demand for domestic textiles was strong.

Like many Southern textile mills, Newry eventually declined due to increased competition from foreign manufacturers and changes in the global textile industry. The mill closed permanently in 1975, ending more than 80 years of operation. After its closure, the buildings stood vacant for many years, but the historical importance of the site was recognized when the Newry Historic District, including the mill and village, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In recent decades, redevelopment efforts have restored portions of the mill and village, giving new life to the historic structures while preserving Newry’s legacy as an important example of Southern mill-village history.
