OHU50K NOTES

We are calling this c.1884 Italianate style home a handyman special only because it has a second bathroom that requires work.  The rest of the home looks great. I love the fireplace mantels and the fact that the home offers front and rear staircases.

Family History

I was able to trace the history of the house to before 1910. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, the John Hill family purchased the home. John was a butcher and lived here for decades. He and his wife Lula raised their children, Vernon, Hazel, Helen and Dorothy, here. The home was valued at $5,000 in 1940.

Town History

The property is located on a corner lot in Nevada, Missouri (pop. 8,607). As I related in an earlier post from this town, the name Nevada for a community in Missouri intrigued me, so I did a bit of research. Apparently, the town was originally named and platted as Hog Eye in 1855. The name (thankfully) was later changed to Nevada by circuit and county clerk DeWitt C. Hunter, after Nevada City, California, where Hunter had been a gold miner.
