Victorian Home For Sale in Jennings, MO
The Stock Family
Joseph F. Stock (1877-1934) and his wife Mary Jennemann Stock (1887-1967) purchased this home sometime after 1920. The couple resided here with their nine children, Loretta, Maryann, Joseph, Agnes, Julia, Rosemary, Vincent, Bernard, and John, and a live-in servant. Joseph Sr. was a manager of a hardware store. After he passed away in 1934 from liver cancer at the age of 56, Mary continued to live in the home with her children. At this point per the 1940 US Census, the servant was gone, but Mary rented a room to a male lodger to earn extra money.
In 1948, Mary sold the house to Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Olsen. It appears that in 1941 Mr. Olsen was the captain of a freighter which rescued 72 British soldiers, adrift in rafts for four days after their ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. If you are so inclined, please read the article below. I found it both tragic and inspirational.
