Family History
Robert A. Francis and Florette R. Francis had this home built for their family, which included son Robert R. and daughter Marion, around 1909. Robert senior was a traveling salesman and Florette liked to play with words. In 1924, she won $100 in the local newspaper’s Jaw-Breakers contest with the ditty below. After Robert senior died in 1920, Florette continued to live in the home with Her son, daughter and their families until her death in 1944.
Soon after Florette passed away, the house was sold to the Pedersen family. Bud Pedersen was the Whittier School PTA President. He probably was mighty embarrassed when in 1955 his seven-year-old son John was playing with matches under the home’s porch and exploded a can of gasoline. John suffered burns on his right leg.
