House History
From its early days, in the 1920s, this house has been a refuge for those seeking cheap apartments. In 1928, furnished rooms were rented to “gents.” In the 1940s and ’50s, young married couples with blue collar jobs, like Rufus Cockrell, a printer, and his wife, Mattie, called one of the apartments home. Later, Blanche Lee, an assembler, and his wife, Evelyn, a clerk, became their neighbors in the home.
The 1960s were less sedate. Sixty-two year old Aribecca Payen was swindled out of $25 from a peddller selling fake negotiable bonds door to door. In 1968, Warren Jackson, Jr. and his girlfriend, Katie Williams, had separate apartments in the building. He sprayed her with lighter fluid and set her afire in her apartment. Jackson was convicted in 1969.
