Town History

In the middle of some of the richest farmland in the state, by the early 1890s, the town had become a center for farmers and businesses. In 1911, however, a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district and twenty homes. A trash fire spread by high winds to a drygoods store, the pump station broke down, and a bucket brigade was formed, but there was not enough water to fight the fire. Every single business downtown burned to the ground except for the First National Bank building, which still stands at 100 West Grand Street, a few blocks down from this home.
