OHU50K NOTES
Save this old house. The latter-day history of this poor house involves a Latter-day Saint couple, two deaths, a foreclosure and a hoarder’s problem. One of the earlier owners was Thomas Caldwell, Clerk for Cherokee County. He lived in the home with his wife Minnis Miller Caldwell, 16 years his junior, and his children, William, Ralph and Helen, from the 1920s until his death in 1935. The house was valued at $8,000 in 1930.
Minnis and children Ralph and Helen continued to live in the home with Ralph as the breadwinner working as a bank teller. Apparently, the family may have been having financial difficulties after Mr. Caldwell’s death, because the home’s value was only assessed at $4,000 in 1940. Boarders were then rented space, including a young couple newly wed in the LDS Washington D.C. Temple, Katherine and Terry Dale.
In 1983, Minnis passed away and the home was placed under foreclosure in 1986. In 1995, a real estate ad was run in The Gaffney Ledger for the sale of the house for $62,000, and a 1995 ad shows it was reduced to $59,900. A sale was not forthcoming, so a 1996 ad was placed to rent the home for $625/month. Presently, it appears residents have a hoarder’s issue. If we can get past all the stuff and the subway tile painted black, the home has real potential.
