The home was owned by the Honorable Charles Hiram Brown (1858-1933). Charles began his career as an attorney, then District Attorney of Allegheny Co. for three terms, and then United States Attorney for the Western District of New York He was elected Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York in 1906 and served for 14 years before retiring.

Charles was married to Alice C. Smith, and they had five children together. Alice died young (1860-1905), so I am not sure if she or the children ever lived in this house. I can go back as far as 1920 when Charles lived here with his sister-in-law Clara, her two sons and a servant. By 1930, Charles and Clara were living alone in the huge house. The 1930 US Census states that the home was worth $10,000 at that time, the most expensive house on the block.
