Family History
The original owner, Dr. A.B. Hughes, was a leading physician, longtime president of the Keokuk board of education, and a former chemistry professor. He was credited with starting a savings book program for the students of Keokuk. Dr. Hughes was described as a self-made man, son of a farmer, who had ” a very tender heart, was charitable to all, very broad minded, full of benevolence, firm as a rock in his faith in God, and one of those Christians who not only fulfill the theological definition, but live for their fellow men every day of their lives.”
He died in 1915, and in 1916, his wife Jennie sold the home.
