Family History

The Lawrence family enjoyed this home for more than 60 years. Carey Smith Lawrence (1883-1965) married Hattie Greer (1886-1964) in 1908 and purchased this home sometime around 1925. They lived here with their six children, Rufus, Rena, Ruby, Ray, Roddie and Ruth. Apparently, they liked “R” names.

In 1936, a mishap occurred causing a small fire that did a bit of damage to the roof, but other than that, the local newspaper reported on several happy family events. PFC Roddie Lawrence received a second battle star in 1944 as a member of the 15th Air Liberator bomber group. He and his family had a big celebration when FDR announced WWII was over in 1945. Thirteen years later, Carey  (who preferred C.S. or Smith) and Hattie marked their 50th wedding anniversary. More than 100 invitees crowded into the house during the day with refreshments served in the dining room.

After the passing of C.S. and Hattie within a year and a half of each other in the mid-1960s, Roddie took over the house. He lived here with his family and ran an art studio out of the home until 1990.
