OHU50K NOTES
Save this old house. This is another flip gone wrong. OHU50K first featured this home in September of 2019 when it was listed for $35,000. It sold for $28,500 in November 2019. It is now back on the market for $49,999. I have included the original listing near the bottom of the page. It currently appears in worse condition than it did in 2019, but deserves redemption. Someone please save this old house and restore it to its former beauty!
I’m thinking the 1803 build date for this Hartford, New York, single story Greek Revival may be more like 1830. Did you note the pocket doors? My cousin and aunt live in the next town north. Hartford is the sweetest little village ever. I’m over the moon with this one.
House History
After building the structure as the proposed courthouse for Washington County, New York, in 1803, voters decided to move the county seat to Fort Edward. Originally, the building had just one floor and a large open cupola in the center. A side room was made with a door to enter the Judges changing room. When the courthouse idea fell through, one of the original 1803 investors purchased the property as a wedding gift for his daughter. They built the second floor. The enclosed porches are original, and a jail cell is in the cellar. A fireproof document room exists but the original kitchen fireplace is destroyed. I sure hope someone who plans to keep the architectural integrity of this gem loves this home as it deserves to be loved.
