Built in 1847, the Folk Victorian home for sale is known as the Zachary Taylor Wellington House. The house was originally constructed as a 1 ½ story house. Z.T. Wellington made substantial changes c.1870 including a rear one-story dining room and kitchen addition, a 10’ extension to the south elevation of the house, and a full second story to the main house. A third bedroom was added above the dining room sometime after 1870. The two-story bathroom addition is estimated to have been constructed c.1925 when houses in the area were receiving indoor plumbing. A one-story, centered front porch with decorative trim and a side porch were demolished in the 1970s when several windows and doors were replaced. A one-story, three-room storage addition was also constructed in the 1970s, but has since been demolished. As the house stands today, it closely resembles the period of significance with exception of the front porch.

Beautiful scrolled winding staircase, cast iron Victorian mantles and much more. Could have a main level 4th bedroom. Property adjoins a small park.

Family History

Erastus Wellington

This home was originally owned by Erastus Wellington (1793-1861). Erastus was a carpenter. He lived here with his wife, Charlotte Webb Wellington (1802-1886) and their children, James, Sarah, Lucinda and Zachary. Zachary (1847-1923) was born in the house and inherited it after the death of his father. Zachary had his hand in many pots over the course of his lifetime. He was a carpenter, deputy sheriff, postmaster and Republican politician. He shared the house with his wife Rebecca, and the couple made many additions to the home around 1870.

Ancestry.com has Zachary Taylor Wellington being born in 1847, death 1923, both events in Huntington, West Virginia. He was the postmaster in town, and lived in the home in 1900 with his wife Rebecca. The couple had a daughter born at the home, Nelle, but she is not listed as living there as a child.
