Family History

This was the home of Clara Johnson Everett (1877-1968) and her children Myrtle, Mildred and William. Clara was a young widow who lived here with her husband Jesse until he passed away in 1919. Both farmed the land around their home, and Clara continued to do so after Jesse’s death.  Clara and the kids lived here for decades with Willian supporting the family working at the general store when he got older. The home was worth $1,500 in 1930. Later the home passed to Mr. and Mrs. Fitt Jones.

Fixer upper. Welcome to the Jones-Everett house in Historic Hamilton NC. This one-story historic home has original Doric type posts, Gable roof, full front porch, original flooring and hardware. The wide-plank hardwood floors are beautiful and in great condition. It was first owned by a musician and would be perfect for another musician with 3 bedrooms, one full bath and a large kitchen/den combo. The bones of this treasure are good; however, some structural work will be needed in a section of the crawlspace. The high bead-board ceilings have been covered with dropped ceiling tiles. The standing seam roof over the main part of the home is in very good condition with light repairs needed on the added back room. Renovations were done to this house over the years adding a bath where the center hall once was and removing the interior chimneys. There is no working heat in the home. While this project isn’t for the faint of heart, it is a fabulous home in a charming, quaint, historic community on the Roanoke River and could be a beautiful, cozy home, AirBnB, studio, retreat … you name it – the possibilities are endless. The Jones-Everett House, c. 1890 is a contributing building in the National Register of Historic Places district. Historic tax credits are available through the NC Dept of Cultural Resources.
