SOKOL, Boris Franklin (6/18/18 -8/18/2012) lived his entire life in Dayton. He attended Jefferson elementary school, Colonel White Junior High and graduated from Steele High School in 1936. He then completed his studies at the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, Class of 1940. Boris was one of those “always gets As” guys. He married Kay Konowitch of Philadelphia on June 21st, 1942. they were married for over 70 years. Their honeymoon was spent driving and settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts, so he could attend US Navy Supply School, which was being held at Harvard. Boris served with distinction from 1942-1945 as an officer in the Supply Corps, stationed for three years in Trinidad. Boris loved the Dayton community and served as President of the Jewish Community Council and as President of the United Jewish Appeal, working tirelessly helping to settle Hungarian refugees here in the Dayton area. Boris and Kay were one of the founding families starting Associate Board of the Dayton Art Institute which he stayed active in for many years. He devoted 18 years as an active member and officer of the Good Samaritan Hospital Board. For his working life Boris followed his father Phil into the family retail business which for decades operated Ray’s- a five story department store at the corner of 4th and Main in downtown Dayton. The last decade of his career was spent owning and managing a Holiday Inn located in Richmond, Indiana which he greatly enjoyed. Boris loved his long retirement and filled his time playing tennis well into his eighties with Kay, and travelling throughout the world on many exciting trips. Winters were often spent in Florida with friends. His greatest joy was the time he spent with with his children, Nora and Bob Newsock of Dayton and their daughter Amy, and with his son Larry who lived in Portland, Oregon with his other two grandchildren, Addie and Max. Toward the end of his life he was blessed with a great grandson, Oslo and Addie’s husband, Andy Hahn. He filled all of their lives with love and humor and his incredible generosity. The circle of Boris’s life was completed with close friends, many of whom he had known since early childhood in Dayton and stayed close with all of their lives, many extending like his over 90 years. His strong will overcame his health problems and left him in the worthy hands of people at Lincoln Park Manor for over seven years. His physician Dr. Louis Heckman took the best of care of his patient. Their kindness and warmth helped him live comfortably for years. Most of all, his close caregiver Michael Marbury, a treasure of humanity, always softened his pain and kept him well for many years more than were ever expected. Too much praise could not possibly be said about the help, work and peace of mind provided by Hospice of Dayton which attended with great love to his needs and those of all of his family members. In addition to his dear wife Kay who was devoted to him every day of his life, he is survived by his children and grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, his sister- in- law June Segal of Philadelphia, and a single great grandchild,living in Portland. His younger beloved and close sister Shelly was a constant uplifting presence for him and often got him to sing even in the final days of his life. Boris lived as worthwhile and blessed a life for 94 years as is possible. His modesty and kindness have been a great joy to all who shared their lives with his. Funeral service will be held Tuesday (TODAY), 2:00P.M. at Temple Israel, 130 Riverside Drive, Alan Halpern officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
