This two bedroom, one bath California starter house for sale with mountain views is located in what has to be the cheapish real estate market in the entire state of California.  A relative recently purchased a house here, and we were visiting my daughter in Newport Beach for the holidays, so we decided to drive to Trona to check it out.  The road to Trona is winding, prone to flooding and falling rocks. We were there on New Year’s Day and it was so cold with fog like soup that did not clear out until noon. I wasn’t expecting the desert to be so cold during the day.

I have included a video below that I took. My impressions: We met some very nice people. Many abandoned homes, but the inhabited homes had no bars on the windows. The town has a library, general store, museum, gas station, clinic, and any graffiti was apparently cleaned up. Searles Lake bed is now full. Ground was broken for a new high school for the 150 high school students. The town looks like a Mad Max apocalyptic type place, but the community has shown resilience and continues to be a unique place with a rich history tied to the mining industry and the natural beauty of the surrounding desert landscape.  Trona is not somewhere that I would want to live, but I can see its good points.

Update: Some news about water. Apparently, the county has a $78/month surcharge for water, sewer trash even if you don’t use it. Then there is the charge for water usage itself. If you do not pay the surcharge in 60 days, the county puts a lien on the house. Was told that many of the abandoned houses in town have liens. The only way to stop the surcharge is to have the pipes capped. However, to uncap the pipes costs thousands of dollars.
