After lumbermen and trappers came to the area, European settlers gradually started moving in during the 1840s. During 1870-1871 a lot of Swedish immigrants came to Caribou, forming a section of town called the Swedish Colony. In fact, this home is on Spring Street, just off Sweden Street.

After the railroad came through, Caribou thrived well into the 1960s and even was known as the largest potato shipping hub in the world until the 1970s. After Loring Air Force Base closed, population declined.
