c.1862 Fixer Upper in Quincy, IL Under $25K
OHU50K NOTES
This fixer upper is located in the South Side German Historic District in Quincy, Illinois. The district is distinguished by the old Dick Brothers Brewing Company plant which is around the corner from our featured home and which closed in 1953. However, the massive expansion of the brewing company in the 1860s (when our house was built) and again in the 1890s and 1900s, created many spin-off industries nearby, including ice houses and workers’ houses.
Family History
Number 903 Kentucky St. is situated on a corner lot with a view of a gorgeous church with high steeple across the street. Per the NRHP, the home is a vernacular house owned by William Winkelmann (b.1827). While most of the heads of household on Kentucky Street in 1870 worked for the brewing company, William was a carpenter. He must have done very well, for his house was valued at $9,500 in that year. William was originally from Oldenburg, Germany, and he lived in this house with his Prussian wife Maria, and children Franz, Clara, Eddy, George and Carl.

This home could certainly use some TLC!! This one could be like something out of Architectural Digest…it just needs someone with vision and deep pockets. I truly hope someone comes to save this marvel from the past!

The stairway could be amazing ! And the woodwork in what I would consider the Dining Room could be spectacular! The woodwork through out the home could be breathtaking if cleaned up and either repainted or stripped of paint and refurbished. I’d be willing to wager that this home was one of the nicest in town!
