There was a code to those old porcelain doorknobs. Crystal was for public areas like the parlor or dining room. Black was for private rooms like bedrooms. White was for the bathroom. Brown was for service areas, basements, and attics. So if you were wandering around an old house looking for the loo, you would not open the door with the black doorknob and surprise the lady of the house as she’s lacing her corset.
