OHU50K NOTES

Located on a corner lot, this once beautiful home now sits alone and forlorn. It has been vacant for several years, but has so many original elements that are crying out for restoration.

History

In the 1890s, lots along West End’s Patterson Avenue SW were selling for $250 to $800. Patterson Avenue, one of Roanoke’s earliest suburbs, was home to some of the city’s wealthiest families and most beautiful Victorian mansions. Developer Ferdinand Rorer in 1850 and purchased a large swath of farmland west of the city.In 1888 a group of bankers and industrialists organized a massive real estate firm and bought 15 blocks of Rorer’s development, marketing it through the West End Land Company.

The West End Land Company advertised the area as an “elite suburb” and zoned it exclusively for “good handsome dwellings.” Lots sold between $250 and $800, and by 1890 several costly and breathtaking and expensive Italianate and Queen Anne mansions had gone up.

Patterson Avenue’s heyday was rather short, 1890-1920. Tastes and zoning changed causing wealthy families to move and and the mansions to become rentals or fall into disrepair.

For 50 years things went downhill, until the 1970s when new residents awoke the city to preserve the treasures of its heritage neighborhoods.

The area is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register.
